The Only Diamond Guide You’ll Ever Need
Let’s be honest.
Buying a diamond today can feel lowkey overwhelming.
Everyone online is saying something different. One jeweller tells you clarity is everything. Another pushes carat size. Someone else tells you to only buy flawless diamonds. And suddenly you’re spending lakhs on something you’re not even fully confident about.
So we wanted to simplify it.
My family has been manufacturing diamonds for over 36 years, and after helping thousands of customers choose diamonds over the years, we realised one thing:
Most people are not confused because diamonds are complicated.
They’re confused because nobody explains them properly.
So here’s the real breakdown of what actually matters when buying a diamond.
1. Cut: The Entire Personality of the Diamond
If there’s one thing you should never compromise on, it’s the cut.
Seriously.
You can have a flawless diamond with the highest color grade possible, but if the cut is weak, the diamond will look dead. No sparkle. No fire. No life.
That crazy brilliance you see in movies and luxury campaigns?
That comes from cut quality.
A well cut diamond reflects light beautifully and creates that bright, sharp sparkle everyone wants.
Here’s what we recommend:
- If you’re buying a round diamond, aim for XXX (Triple Excellents)
- If you’re buying a fancy shape (oval, pear, emerald, cushion, etc.), go for 2X
- Look for:
- Excellent polish
- Excellent symmetry
Because at the end of the day:
Without cut, there is no shine.
2. Color: Why Some Diamonds Look Crisp and Others Don’t
Diamond color grading goes from D to Z.
The closer you are to D, the whiter and cleaner the diamond appears.
We usually recommend staying within:
- D
- E
- F
Why?
Because once you move lower, diamonds can start showing yellow or grey undertones especially under natural lighting.
And once you see the difference side by side, you genuinely can’t unsee it.
The bright white diamonds you see in luxury campaigns?
Those are higher color grades.
3. Fluorescence: The Thing Almost Nobody Talks About
This is probably one of the most underrated diamond factors.
Fluorescence affects how a diamond reacts under UV light, and stronger fluorescence can sometimes make a diamond appear:
- hazy,
- milky,
- or cloudy.
Which basically kills the sparkle.
The grading scale goes:
- None
- Faint
- Medium
- Strong
- Very Strong
Our advice?
Stick to diamonds with no fluorescence whenever possible.
Because even an expensive diamond can look dull if the stone has heavy fluorescence.
4. Clarity: Important, But Not the Main Character
This is where the industry gets a little too dramatic.
A lot of stores push VVS, Internally Flawless, or Flawless diamonds as if anything lower isn’t worth buying.
But here’s the truth:
Most inclusions are visible only under heavy magnification.
Which means for everyday wear, you really do not need to overspend chasing microscopic perfection.
For most people:
- VS1
- VS2
- and above
is more than enough.
A beautiful diamond is about what your eyes can actually see not what a microscope sees at zoom.
So What’s the Perfect Diamond?
If we had to build the ideal balanced diamond, it would look something like this:
- Excellent cut
- D/E/F color
- No fluorescence
- VS clarity or above
That combination gives you beauty, sparkle, quality, and smart value without unnecessarily overspending.
Final Thoughts
We genuinely believe buying a diamond should feel exciting not stressful.
The industry sometimes makes diamonds sound more confusing than they need to be, but once you understand these four basics:
- Cut
- Color
- Fluorescence
- Clarity
everything becomes much easier.
At the end of the day, the best diamond isn’t just the one with the highest specs on paper.
It’s the one that looks beautiful every single time you wear it.
